RESUMO

High concentrations of heavy metals in mine soil disturb the interactions between legumes and microorganisms leading to select strains adapted to these specific conditions. In this work, we analyzed the diversity of fifty strains isolated from Trifolium sp. nodules growing on Pb-Zn mine soil, in the Northeastern of Algeria and highlighted their potential symbiotic traits. The phylogeny of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a high bacterial diversity with a predominance of non-rhizobial endophytes. The identified isolates belong to the thirteen following genera Cupriavidus, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Roseomonas, Paracoccus, Frondihabitans, Microbacterium, Kocuria, Providencia, Micrococcus and Staphylococcus. Regarding rhizobial strains, only isolates affiliated to Rhizobium genus were obtained. The symbiotic gene nodC and the nitrogen fixation gene nifH present showed that Rhizobium isolates belonged to the symbiovar trifolii. In addition to bacterial, one yeast strain was isolated and identified as Rhodotorula mucilaginosa by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region.

BACKGROUND: Although most bloodstream yeast infections are caused by Candida spp., infections by rare or less common species have increased in recent years. Diagnosis of infections caused by these species is difficult due to the lack of specific symptoms and adequate diagnostic tools. CASES PRESENTATION: We describe two cases of fungemia by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa within a few months of each other, in a secondary Spanish hospital. In both cases, diagnosis was challenging. Blood subcultures in conventional fungal media were persistently negatives and the use of non-conventional fungal media was essential for isolating the yeasts and achieving a correct diagnosis. 1-3 beta-D-glucan detection and a panfungal PCR assay were helpful techniques to confirm the diagnosis CONCLUSION: It is highly important to establish an early diagnosis for fungemia. The process is challenging because often non-specific symptoms are presents. When yeasts grow in blood cultures other genera than Candida spp. could be the cause of infection. Patient risk factors should be assessed to incorporate alternative culture media and the available rapid diagnostic test, in order to provide an early recognition of the pathogen.

BACKGROUND: The fungal community of the gastrointestinal tract has recently become of interest, and knowledge of its relationship with the development of obesity is scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the cultivable fungal fraction from the microbiota and to analyze its relationship with obesity. METHODS: Samples were taken from 99 participants with normal weight, overweight and obesity (n = 31, 34 and 34, respectively) and were cultivated in selective medium, and the cultivable yeasts were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Anthropometric and biochemical measures were also evaluated. RESULTS: Eutrophic, overweight and obese groups presented concentrations of 1.6, 2.16 and 2.19 log10  colony-forming units g-1 yeast, respectively. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the two identified phyla. At the genus level, Candida spp. showed a relatively high prevalence, and 10 different species were detected: Candida glabrata, Candida orthopsilosis, Candida lambica, Candida kefyr, Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida valida, Candida parapsilosis, Candida utilis and Candida humilis (with relative abundances of 71.72%, 5.05%, 21.21%, 6.06%, 29.29%, 27.27%, 8.08%, 16.16%, 1.01% and 2.02%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The obese group presented a higher prevalence of Candida albicans. Furthermore, Candida albicans, Candida kefyr and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa showed a high positive correlation with obesity, weight gain and fat mass and showed a negative correlation with high-density lipoprotein and lean mass, parameters related to weight loss.

One of the very promising methods in the field of bioremediation of hydrocarbons is the application of biosurfactant- producing microorganisms based on the use of wastewater as renewable substrates of culture media, contributing to the reduction of costs. With this aim, the production, characterization and properties of the yeast strain YBR producing a biosurfactant newly isolated from an oilfield in Algeria, using wastewater from olive oil mills (OOMW) as a substrate for a low-cost and effective production, have been investigated. Screening of biosurfactant production was carried out with different tests, including emulsification index test (E24), drop collapse test, oil spreading technique and measurement of surface tension (ST). The isolated yeast strain was found to be a potent biosurfactant producer with E24 = 69% and a significant reduction in ST from 72 to 35 mN m-1. The study of the cultural, biochemical, physiological and genetic characteristics of the isolate allowed us to identify it as Rhodotorula sp. strain YBR. Fermentation was carried out in a 2.5 L Minifors Bioreactor using crude OOMW as culture medium, the E24 value reached 90% and a reduction of 72 to 35 mN m-1 in ST. A biosurfactant yield = 10.08 ± 0.38 g L-1 was recorded. The characterization by semi-purification and thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the crude extract of biosurfactant showed the presence of peptides, carbohydrates and lipids in its structure. The crude biosurfactant exhibited interesting properties such as: low critical micellar concentration (CMC), significant reduction in ST and strong emulsifying activity. In addition, it has shown stability over a wide range of pH (2-12), temperature (4-100 °C) and salinity (1-10%). More interestingly, the produced biosurfactant has proven to be of great potential application in the remobilization of hydrocarbons from polluted soil with a removal rate of greater than 95%.

A strain NQ1, which showed efficient asymmetric reduction of 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) acetophenone (BTAP) to enantiopure (S)-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]ethanol ((S)-BTPE), which is the key intermediate for the synthesis of a receptor antagonist and antidepressant, was isolated from a soil sample. Based on its morphological and internal transcribed spacer sequence, the strain NQ1 was identified to be Rhodotorula mucilaginosa NQ1. Some key reaction parameters involved in the bioreduction catalyzed by whole cells of R. mucilaginosa NQ1 were subsequently optimized, and the optimized conditions for the synthesis of (S)-BTPE were determined to be as follows: 5·0 ml phosphate buffer (200 mmol l-1 , pH 7·0), 80 mmol l-1 of BTAP, 250 g (wet weight) l-1 of resting cell, 35 g l-1 of glucose and a reaction for 18 h at 30°C and 180 rev min-1 . The strain NQ1 exhibited a best yield of 99% and an excellent enantiomeric excess of 99% for the preparation of (S)-BTPE under the above optimal conditions, and could also asymmetrically reduce a variety of bulky prochiral carbonyl compounds to their corresponding optical hydroxyl compound with excellent enantioselectivity. These results indicated that R. mucilaginosa NQ1 had a good capacity to reduce BTAP to its corresponding (S)-BTPE, and might be a new potential biocatalyst for the production of valuable chiral hydroxyl compounds in industry.

AIMS: This study aims to identify the yeast species and strains which entitled an unstudied area of Spain and evaluate the yeast species diversity richness and the genetic variety. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 702 yeasts were isolated from different environments in a central Spanish region (La Mancha) with diverse sources of origin (food, animals, flowers and environmental sources) during spring season. Thanks to the analysis carried out by the PCR-RFLP technique and sequencing, 35 species were identified. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree was created based on D1/D2 sequences. Moreover 330 strains were determined by PCR-RAPD and their profiles were analysed using the bioinformatics programme BioNumerics 7·6. The Simpson's index (D) and the genetic diversity percentage were calculated with the aim of studying the richness of the species in each environment and the genetic variety in each species. CONCLUSIONS: This study has permitted to know that the majority of the species found was Diutina rugosa while the most ubiquitous was Rhodotorula mucilaginosa which expose the dispersion capability of this species. The diversity parameters has revealed that the highest species richness was associated to environmental samples and the highest genetic variety was presented in those species with better dispersion capability or a smaller number of isolates. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study permits to better understand the yeast communities in La Mancha region which gives a value the microbial potential of this region.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis can uncommonly be caused by fungal infections. When they do present, they are associated with significant mortality and morbidity. We describe a case where a sample of peritoneal dialysate fluid grew Rhodotorula muciliginosa, a yeast organism present in the normal environment which has previously been reported as rarely causing peritonitis. We believe this is the first case where the Rhodotorula spp. and its origin has been identified. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20 year old male grew Rhodotorula muciliginosa from his peritoneal dialysis fluid on three separate occasions when a fluid sample was sent following a disconnection and subsequent set change. He was not systemically unwell and his peritoneal dialysate was clear. As Rhodotorula spp. is exceedingly difficult to treat our patient had his Tenchkoff catheter removed. Subsequent samples of soil and sand from his bearded dragon and Chilean tarantula cases, kept in his bedroom where dialysis occurred, were tested. The tarantula sand was identified as the source of the Rhodotorula spp. Of note, Candida was isolated from sand from the bearded dragon case. Once his Tenchkoff was removed he was treated with an intravenous course of antifungal therapy. He has since had a new Tenchkoff catheter inserted and recommenced PD following education around pets and hygiene. CONCLUSIONS: In this era where people are keeping increasingly rare and unusual wildlife in their homes, this case highlights the need for clinician and nursing staff awareness of a patient's home environment and hobbies when they are undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Sand from our patient's tarantula case grew the colonising organism but interestingly soil from his bearded dragon case also isolated candida. This can also cause difficult to treat peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Rhodotorula species were traditionally considered non-virulent environmental microorganisms, but are nowadays considered important human pathogens, especially in immunocompromised individuals. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 73 year-old man with diarrhea, anorexia and fever. In the blood analyses, both aerobic blood culture bottles yielded the growth of Rhodotorula dairenensis. The MALDI-TOF MS score was inadequate to provide an identification, which was achieved by means of molecular techniques. Treatment with an echinocandin was started, but the patient died. CONCLUSIONS: Basidiomycetous yeast genera such as Rhodotorula can cause invasive and severe infections, e.g., fungemia, especially in patients with central venous catheter or another indwelling device.

This paper represents a comprehensive study of two new thraustochytrids and a marine Rhodotorula red yeast isolated from Australian coastal waters for their abilities to be a potential renewable feedstock for the nutraceutical, food, fishery and bioenergy industries. Mixotrophic growth of these species was assessed in the presence of different carbon sources: glycerol, glucose, fructose, galactose, xylose, and sucrose, starch, cellulose, malt extract, and potato peels. Up to 14g DW/L (4.6gDW/L-day and 2.8gDW/L-day) of biomass were produced by Aurantiochytrium and Thraustochytrium species, respectively. Thraustochytrids biomass contained up to 33% DW of lipids, rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6, 124mg/g DW); up to 10.2mg/gDW of squalene and up to 61µg/gDW of total carotenoids, composed of astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, echinenone, and ß-carotene. Along with the accumulation of these added-value chemicals in biomass, thraustochytrid representatives showed the ability to secrete extracellular polysaccharide matrixes containing lipids and proteins. Rhodotorula sp lipids (26% DW) were enriched in palmitic acid (C16:0, 18mg/gDW) and oleic acid (C18:1, 41mg/gDW). Carotenoids (87µg/gDW) were mainly represented by ß-carotene (up to 54µg/gDW). Efficient growth on organic and inorganic sources of carbon and nitrogen from natural and anthropogenic wastewater pollutants along with intracellular and extracellular production of valuable nutrients makes the production of valuable chemicals from isolated species economical and sustainable.

ANTECEDENTES: Las especies de Rhodotorula han sido tradicionalmente consideradas huéspedes ambientales no virulentos, pero hoy día han demostrado ser importantes patógenos humanos, sobre todo en individuos inmunocomprometidos. CASO CLÍNICO: Se presenta el caso clínico de un varón de 73 años con diarrea, anorexia y fiebre. En los frascos de hemocultivos aerobios creció Rhodotorula dairenensis. El sistema MALDI-TOF MS no proporcionó un buen score, por lo que la identificación se realizó finalmente mediante técnicas moleculares. Se instauró tratamiento con una equinocandina, pero finalmente el paciente falleció. CONCLUSIONES: Las levaduras de géneros pertenecientes a los basidiomicetos, como Rhodotorula, pueden producir infecciones invasivas y graves como fungemia, especialmente en pacientes con catéteres venosos centrales u otros dispositivos invasivos

BACKGROUND: Apples often experience postharvest damage due to being attacked by mold organisms. Several groups of molds such as Aspergillus sp., Penicilium expansum, Botrytis cinerea, and Venturia sp. can cause a serious postharvest disease exhibited as watery regions where areas of blue-green tufts of spores develop. Current methods using fungicides to control pathogenic fungi can cause resistance if applied in the long term. An alternative procedure using yeast as a biological agent has been found. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to screen potential yeast, which has the ability to inhibit the growth of Aspergillus brasielensis (isolate A1) and Aspergillus flavus section flavi (isolate A17) isolated from apple fruits. METHODS: Antagonism test using YMA dual culture medium using in vitro assays and ITS rDNA identification were performed. RESULTS: The result showed that 3 out of 19 yeast isolated from Cerbera manghas L, T1, T3 and T4, demonstrated the potential ability as a biocontrol agent. ITS rDNA identification demonstrated that T1 has a similarity to Rhodotorula mucilaginosa while T3 and T4 were identified as Aureobasidium sp. nov. The 3 isolates exhibited the ability to reduce the growth of A. brasiliensis sensu lato better than dithane 0.3% with a Disease Incidence (DI) of 100% and a Disease Severity (DS) value of 45%. Only isolate T1 and T3 were able to reduce decay symptoms in apples inoculated with A. flavus sensu lato (with DO and DS were 100% and 25%, respectively) compared to dithane pesticides 0.3%. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that competition between nutrients occurs between pathogenic molds and under-yeast in vitro and in vivo conditions. However, further studies in the future might be able to elucidate the 'killer' activity and interaction with the pathogen cells and the bio-product production using Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Aureoubasidium namibiae strains to control postharvest diseases.

The use of appropriate yeast strains allows to better control the fermentation during beverage production. Bee products, especially of stingless bees, are poorly explored as sources of fermenting microorganisms. In this work, yeasts were isolated from honey and pollen from Tetragonisca angustula (Jataí), Nannotrigona testaceicornis (Iraí), Frieseomelitta varia (Marmelada), and honey of Apis mellifera bees and screened according to morphology, growth, and alcohol production. Bee products showed to be potential sources of fermenting microorganisms. From 55 isolates, one was identified as Papiliotrema flavescens, two Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, five Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and nine Starmerella meliponinorum. The S. cerevisiae strains were able to produce ethanol and glycerol at pH 4.0-8.0 and temperature of 10-30 °C, with low or none production of undesirable compounds, such as acetic acid and methanol. These strains are suitable for the production of bioethanol and alcoholic beverages due to their high ethanol production, similar or superior to the commercial strain, and in a broad range of conditions like as 50% (m/v) glucose, 10% (v/v) ethanol, or 500 mg L-1 of sodium metabisulfite.

Nitrogen (N) limits crop yield, and improvement of N nutrition remains a key goal for crop research; one approach to improve N nutrition is identifying plant-interacting, N2-fixing microbes. Rhodotorula mucilaginosa JGTA-S1 is a basidiomycetous yeast endophyte of narrowleaf cattail (Typha angustifolia). JGTA-S1 could not convert nitrate or nitrite to ammonium but harbors diazotrophic (N2-fixing) endobacteria (Pseudomonas stutzeri) that allow JGTA-S1 to fix N2 and grow in a N-free environment; moreover, P. stutzeri dinitrogen reductase was transcribed in JGTA-S1 even under adequate N. Endobacteria-deficient JGTA-S1 had reduced fitness, which was restored by reintroducing P. stutzeri JGTA-S1 colonizes rice (Oryza sativa), significantly improving its growth, N content, and relative N-use efficiency. Endofungal P. stutzeri plays a significant role in increasing the biomass and ammonium content of rice treated with JGTA-S1; also, JGTA-S1 has better N2-fixing ability than free-living P. stutzeri and provides fixed N to the plant. Genes involved in N metabolism, N transporters, and NODULE INCEPTION-like transcription factors were upregulated in rice roots within 24 h of JGTA-S1 treatment. In association with rice, JGTA-S1 has a filamentous phase and P. stutzeri only penetrated filamentous JGTA-S1. Together, these results demonstrate an interkingdom interaction that improves rice N nutrition.

Trichosporon asahii and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa are important fungal species causing disseminated disease in immunocompromised patients. Onychomycosis prevalence rate ranges from 2 to 30%, which were 50% of nail diseases and 30% of superficial mycosis, respectively. Although important, little is known about the co-habitation of T. asahii and R. mucilaginosa in the causation of onychomycosis. Here, we present the co-habitation of T. asahii and R. mucilaginosa as causative agents of onychomycosis in a healthy 41-year-old male in China. Direct microscopic examination, fungal culture and MALDI-TOF MS were employed in isolated pathogens; hence, antifungal susceptibility test was evaluated. T. asahii was sensitive to posaconazole, voriconazole and itraconazole, whereas R. mucilaginosa was sensitive to both 5-flucytosine and amphotericin B. This report highlights the co-habitation of T. asahii and R. mucilaginosa in the causation of onychomycosis and to raise the awareness of this infection among dermatologists.

Objetivo: Investigar a presença de fungos patogênicos isolados a partir de amostras de fezes de pombos, em locais de atenção a pacientes imunocomprometidos no DF. Método: As amostras foram coletadas em hospitais onde se oferta atendimento a pacientes HIV/AIDS e que tenha uma presença massiva de pombos. Colônias de leveduras foram previamente selecionados em meio Ágar Sabouraud Dextrose acrescido de cloranfenicol, seguindo-se com análise microscópica das estruturas leveduriformes. Colônias de leveduras com suspeita de pertencerem ao gênero Candida spp. ou Cryptococcus sp., foram inoculadas no meio Ágar Cromogênico para identificação das espécies de Candida e em meio Ágar quimicamente definido para indução dos fenótipos de virulência característicos de Cryptococcus sp. Resultados: 100% das amostras analisadas apresentaram crescimento de leveduras do gênero Candida spp. e Rhodotorula sp. No meio Ágar Cromogênico foram identificadas nas amostras C. krusei em 75%; C. tropicalis em 50% e C. glabrata em 15%. Em 15% das amostras foi identificado leveduras do gênero Cryptococcus sp. Conclusão: Dados deste estudo sugerem que fezes de pombo podem estar dispersando leveduras patogênicas e contribuindo com a incidência de infecções fúngicas no DF.


Objective: To investigate the presence of pathogenic fungi isolated from pigeon stool samples, in places of care for immunocompromised patients in the Federal District. Method: The samples were collected in hospitals where care is offered to HIV / AIDS patients and which has a massive presence of pigeons. Yeast colonies were previously selected on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plus chloramphenicol, followed by microscopic analysis of the yeast structures. Yeast colonies suspected of belonging to the genus Candida spp. or Cryptococcus sp., were inoculated in the Chromogenic Agar medium to identify Candida species and in chemically defined Agar medium to induce the virulence phenotypes characteristic of Cryptococcus sp. Results: 100% of the analyzed samples showed growth of yeasts of the genus Candida spp. and Rhodotorula sp. In the chromogenic agar medium, 75% were identified in C. krusei samples; C. tropicalis in 50% and C. glabrata in 15%. In 15% of the samples, yeasts of the genus Cryptococcus sp. Conclusion: Data from this study suggest that pigeon feces may be dispersing pathogenic yeasts and contributing to the incidence of fungal infections in DF


Objetivo: Investigar la presencia de hongos patógenos aislados de muestras de heces de palomas, en los lugares de atención a pacientes inmunodeprimidos del Distrito Federal. Método: Las muestras se recolectaron en hospitales donde se brinda atención a pacientes con VIH / SIDA y que tiene una presencia masiva de palomas. Las colonias de levadura se seleccionaron previamente en Sabouraud Dextrose Agar más cloranfenicol, seguido de un análisis microscópico de las estructuras de la levadura. Las colonias de levaduras sospechosas de pertenecer al género Candida spp. o Cryptococcus sp., se inocularon en medio de agar cromogénico para identificar especies de Candida y en medio de agar químicamente definido para inducir los fenotipos de virulencia característicos de Cryptococcus sp. Resultados: el 100% de las muestras analizadas presentó crecimiento de levaduras del género Candida spp. y Rhodotorula sp. En el medio agar cromogénico, el 75% se identificó en muestras de C. krusei; C. tropicalis en 50% y C. glabrata en 15%. En el 15% de las muestras, levaduras del género Cryptococcus sp. Conclusión: Los datos de este estudio sugieren que las heces de las palomas pueden estar dispersando levaduras patógenas y contribuyendo a la incidencia de infecciones fúngicas en el DF.

Compounds belonging to the group of 5-substituted 4-(1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diols exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activity, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties. The mechanism of the antifungal activity of compounds from this group has not been described to date. Among the large group of 5-substituted 4-(1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diol derivatives, the compound 4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diol, abbreviated as C1, was revealed to be one of the most active agents against pathogenic fungi, simultaneously with the lowest toxicity to human cells. The C1 compound is a potent antifungal agent against different Candida species, including isolates resistant to azoles, and molds, with MIC100 values ranging from 8 to 96 µg/ml. The antifungal activity of the C1 compound involves disruption of the cell wall biogenesis, as evidenced by the inability of cells treated with C1 to maintain their characteristic cell shape, increase in size, form giant cells and flocculate. C1-treated cells were also unable to withstand internal turgor pressure causing protoplast material to leak out, exhibited reduced osmotic resistance and formed buds that were not covered with chitin. Disturbances in the chitin septum in the neck region of budding cells was observed, as well as an uneven distribution of chitin and ß(1→3) glucan, and increased sensitivity to substances interacting with wall polymerization. The ATR-FTIR spectral shifts in cell walls extracted from C. albicans cells treated with the C1 compound suggested weakened interactions between the molecules of ß(1→3) glucans and ß(1→6) glucans, which may be the cause of impaired cell wall integrity. Significant spectral changes in the C1-treated cells were also observed in bands characteristic for chitin. The C1 compound did not affect the ergosterol content in Candida cells. Given the low cytotoxicity of the C1 compound to normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF), it is possible to use this compound as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of surface and gastrointestinal tract mycoses.

The processing conditions and physiochemical properties used in food manufacturing create niches which support the growth of a limited number of spoilage fungi. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic food product variables on the identity of spoilage fungi genera isolated from commercially produced foods. The spoilage etiology was identified in 127 products through ITS region sequencing. The prevalence and diversity of the identified spoilage fungi were evaluated in relationship to product-specific attributes using various descriptive statistics and a bipartite network analysis. Additionally, recursive partitioning was used to generate a classification tree with the outcomes, genera of the spoilage isolates, divided into increasingly homogenous subgroups. All of the isolated fungi belonged to the Ascomycete phylum, except four mucoralian isolates and the basidiomycete Rhodotorula. The occurrence of filamentous fungi repeatedly isolated ranged from 2% (Phoma spp.) to 18% (Penicillium spp.). In order of decreasing contribution to subgroup homogeneity, the split rules for the classification tree were based on process, water activity, food matrix category, and pH. Fungal genera representation in the terminal nodes indicated that production failures, in addition to product-specific attributes, were responsible for determination of the most probable spoilage organism.

During this study, we characterized the seasonality's impact and environmental conditions on the yeast diversity from raw camel's milk collected in Algeria. The yeast counts were estimated to 3.55 × 102 CFU mL-1, with a maximum of 6.3 × 102 CFU mL-1. The yeasts were categorized phenotypically by API 20C AUX, MALDI-TOF and genetically by sequencing 26S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2. The rDNA sequencing approaches revealed 12 species including unusual ones such as Trichosporon asahii, Pichia fermentans, Millerozyma farinosa, Pichia galeiformis, Candida tartarivorans and Pichia manshurica. The most dominant species were T. asahii (23%), P. fermentans (19%) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (14%). The high occurrence and large diversity were registered in samples collected during the autumn season, in the semi-arid and arid highlands regions with 0.66 × 103 CFU mL-1 and 0.51 × 103 CFU mL-1, respectively. Interestingly, T. asahii, R. mucilaginosa, P. fermentans, C. parapsilosis and C. zeylanoides were detected during both spring and autumn.

BACKGROUND: Rhodotorula spp are uncommon yeasts able to cause infections with high mortality rates. Rhodotorula infections have been associated with the presence of central venous catheter (CVC), immunosuppression, exposure to antifungals and the presence of either solid or haematologic malignancies. However, in this latter setting, only a few cases have so far been reported. OBJECTIVES: We have conducted a survey for Rhodotorula infections in haematologic patients. METHODS: Patients' clinical and microbiological data were collected and correlated to the outcome. RESULTS: A total of 27 cases were detected from 13 tertiary care hospitals. About 78% and 89% of patients had acute leukaemia and CVC. About 70% of patients were exposed to prophylaxis with azoles, mainly posaconazole (37%), 59% were severely neutropenic and 37% underwent allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT). The most frequent treatments were liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) and CVC removal in 17 and 16 patients, respectively. One month post-diagnosis, mortality was 26% and was associated with the presence of mucositis (P = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that Rhodotorula spp should be considered as aetiologic agents of breakthrough infections in acute leukaemia patients with a CVC, mucositis, who receive prophylaxis with azoles, including posaconazole, and/or undergo alloSCT. Prompt measures, such as L-AmB administration and CVC removal, should be carried out to avoid the high mortality risk of Rhodotorula infections.
